Community Recognition Alumni Award - Dr. Maurice Chapin
Dr. Maurice Chapin,
'51,
has spent most of his life in service to others.
He spent four years in the U.S. Army, including a family practice residency at the U.S. Army Hospital
in Fort Knox, Kentucky.
In 1961 he and his family settled in Millington, where he opened his family medicine practice.
He was on the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Flint and won the Physician of the Year award
in 1986. Dr. Chapin officially retired in 1999 after 38 years in practice.
Throughout his career he served on many boards and committees, including a review board for
nursing homes in the Flint area. He has served on the Flint District Board of Missions and
the Haiti Liberia Task Force. He has gathered, organized, and facilitated the shipping of
medical supplies to the Samuteb Hospital in the Congo. And he served as a nurse/physician
for Camp Kinawind, a Methodist summer camp, for many years.
Dr. Chapin has taken many mission trips to use his medical skills in Honduras, the Dominican
Republic, Guatemala, and twice to Zimbabwe. He helped with cleanup from Hurricane Katrina in
Mississippi and Louisiana and will be taking a mission trip to the Appalachian area in July.
He volunteers for the Forgotten Men’s Prison Ministries, he tutors in the Millington Elementary
School, and he volunteers in a local free clinic.
He and his first wife, the late Beverly Gould Chapin, a CMU alumna, raised six children.
He established the Beverly A. Gould Chapin Endowed Music Award in memory of Beverly, who was a
music teacher, and he has established the Dr. Maurice H. Chapin Pre-Medicine Endowed Award for
a pre-med student.
