Spouses share magazine

Editor: My wife, Elinore (Schmidt) Peters, is a 1960 graduate of Central, and when her copy of Centralight arrives, I always enjoy reading it, too. I’m not a full Central alum myself – I was in a pre-engineering program for the 1955-56 school year before transferring to engineering school.

One page in your Fall 2008 issue really caught my eye: the sampling of alumni-written books on Page 35. You see, I’m a proud new author myself. Over a span of 10 years I collected diaries, letters and reminiscent accounts describing the trip some of my relatives took from their native New York State to the Oregon Territory in 1853, a year in which they were joined by thousands of others on the Oregon Trail. I fashioned this material into a book, “Seven Months to Oregon: 1853.”

Just thought you might like to know. Keep up your fine work with Centralight!

Environmentalist’s nuclear power views misleading

Editor: Centralight magazine is very enjoyable reading. However, I was disappointed with the Winter 2008 article, “Up close with … Patrick Moore.”

Mr. Moore’s views on nuclear power are out of line with environmental groups. His lecture tours and speaking engagements linking sound environmental policy to nuclear power are very misleading and deceitful. I would like to hear from someone not so close to the nuclear power industry.

Without going into all the social, economic and environmental negative aspects of what more nuclear power plants would do to our world, Moore’s pronuclear pitch is straight from the nuclear power industry’s public relations campaign to revitalize nuclear power in the United States regardless of the consequences.
For additional information, research Clean and Safe Energy Coalition and also Patrick Moore on the Internet.
