Love, CMU style
Shawn and Erin
Erin and I met on the seventh floor of Carey Hall in the Towers, where we both lived during our freshman year in 1995-96. Ironically, back home we lived about five miles apart in the Detroit area and attended neighboring high schools, but we never knew each other prior to attending CMU. We became friends during our freshman year and started going steady by the end of the summer.
We got engaged a few years later when I proposed to her on the Nelson Park bridge over the Chippewa River on New Year’s Day. I remember getting down on one knee to propose once we were on top of the bridge, and it was so cold that day, Erin turned around quickly and almost ran back to the car. I had to grab her, and when she turned around, she realized what I was doing. She said yes, the best words I have ever heard, and we got married in 2001.
Erin and I know it was meant to be for both of us to attend CMU that year, otherwise, we would have never met each other or our close friends we made at CMU. Mount Pleasant and CMU will always be very special places in our hearts.

It all started in chemistry class. On the first day of class my sophomore year at CMU I walked into chemistry class and noticed a cute guy sitting in front of me. He turned in my direction, we locked eyes, and I guess that you could say there was instant “chemistry” between us.
After class I started to walk back to my dorm, and I noticed that the cute guy from class was walking in the same direction. Not only was he walking in the same direction, but he walked into my dorm and then, to my amazement, onto my floor. Yes, as fate would have it, we were both living on first floor Herrig.
This all happened 25 years ago, and we have been happily married for 20 years and have been blessed with three wonderful sons.
Oh yeah, and we both got A’s in that
chemistry class!

It was a classic Chippewa love story. I needed a ride home, he had a car, and we were both headed for downriver Detroit! After graduating from CMU, we were married in 1978. We couldn’t have imagined how happy and blessed we were going to be when we left Mount Pleasant as proud graduates 30 years ago. It’s been a great ride!
