Margaret and John
Margaret attended Benzie County Normal for one year and Central for three, receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1952. John entered college following a tour in the Army, with expenses covered under the GI Bill. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1954 and master’s in 1961.
We met during play production classes taught by Fred Bush. These classes and Bernard Stone’s a cappella choir performances “on the road” throughout the state are cherished memories.
Leisure time was spent socializing at
the student union in Keeler Hall or after hours at The Bird or The Blackstone for the weekly TGIF sing-along and mug raising.

Beverly and Jack
It was in Grace Ryan’s 8 a.m. P.E. 27A folk dance class in the fall of 1949 that I met Jack Vince. I was a 23-year-old sophomore, and he was a 23-year old junior (Navy veteran). The class was required for P.E. majors and minors.
A classmate, Bill Kirby, asked me to “fix him up” with my cute freshman roommate. I asked what he would do for me. Jack overheard the conversation and asked if I would like to go out with him. Blonde, tanned from summer lifeguard duty, and a good dancer – I accepted.
We were chosen to be in the travel dance group, putting on demonstrations. We were able to spend quality time together, along with several varsity ballplayers. We both earned A’s in P.E. 27A. Jack got his B.S. in December 1950. I got my “Mrs.” August 18, 1951.

In 1959-60, I was student teaching in Manistee, and one weekend my critic teacher called me. She said her son was home from college for the weekend and would I like to go out on a date with him? Of course, I said yes. One needed an A in student teaching to be assured of a teaching position.
After she checked with me, she then asked her son if he would like to take her student teacher out. Nice guy that he was, he said yes. Blind date. We have been married 46 years and have two sons.

It was the fall of 1975, and I was sitting in Dr. Magnell’s inorganic chemistry lecture. I noticed a good-looking guy sitting in the front row. A week or so later, I figured out a way to meet this good-looking guy by rather deliberately having trouble with my Buchner funnel in chemistry lab. It was a wonderful year … ice cream at the Malt Shop after intramural basketball games, long talks over dinner at Casa Nova’s, and study time on the upper floors of Park Library. Jim Cross and I were married in September 1979, and God has truly blessed our 27 years together.

Marian and Wayne
I entered Central in the fall of 1928. It was the Depression, and one of our most enjoyable social activities was the Scotch Hop every Friday afternoon. The charge was two cents for the afternoon.
In January 1930, by fate, both Wayne Grimm and I were at the “hop,” and he asked me to dance. From that one dance it was ever Wayne and Marian until Wayne’s sudden death at Christmas 1994.
There were few teaching positions available in 1932 when Wayne graduated. Being ingenious, Wayne, Doc Rowe, and Hugh Calkins sold soap powder door-to-door that summer. Another job was collecting unpaid telephone bills in Flint. By 1935 employment improved, and Wayne and I were married. I was teaching junior high English in Berkley, and Wayne was hired to teach at Whittemore.
Central bestowed an honorary doctorate on Wayne in December 1977. Once past that unpleasant Depression, everything for us has been upward and onward. Nothing can compare to our wonderful life together since the Friday afternoon Scotch Hop that January 1930.
